I lost track of him, but I imagine he retired as a janitor.

Just as government schools around the world are unleashing a flood of graduates into the job market, bureaucracies are shrinking due to technological innovations and productivity enhancements. That college degree is quickly losing its value.

In the past college degrees promised massive returns on investment because they were rare, and because those who could afford years of deferred earnings while in college were already well connected and financially well off. There was a following period where the level of rewards exceeded the costs of diploma acquisition, as bureaucracies required low level supervisors to have a degree, any degree. That time is passing, but a time of great rewards is opening for those that improve their most valuable asset, their own capabilities.
